This last week I had to go to Indiana to get some dental work done from a very good friend there. While I was there, I had the opportunity to head north to Howe, IN, where another very good friend lives that also just happens to have a 2008 Honda CRF450R, and a motocross track in his back yard (he has 5 acres).
The dental work went well, but the real fun was had at the Motoman Facility, a.k.a., Motoman’s motocross track. I was able to spend Friday through Sunday there, and got to ride his new 2008 Honda CRF450R as well as his track. I loved both.
I have been off a bike for at least 7 months, and haven’t owned one in over a year, so I was a bit rusty to say the least. I still had fun, and it was great to actually get out and do some riding.
As far as the CRF450R is concerned… It’s a great bike. It turns well, the power is unreal, and the fit and finish are typical Honda. I didn’t notice the HPSD at all, but I did notice that the 2008 bike TURNS on a dime. I also rode a 2007 Honda CRF450R and it certainly did not turn as well as the 2008 model.
I’m still a little undecided about whether I want an RM-Z450 or a CRF450R, but only because I didn’t get that light feeling when in the air that I got from the RM-Z. We’ll have to see though because I don’t want a 2008 RM-Z450 with EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection), which means I’ll have to see if I can locate a 2007 model. I also don’t have a local dealer for Suzuki, so we’ll see. I’m still a couple of weeks away from buying anyway, so I’ll decide then.
The Motoman Facility was awesome. Can you imagine having a motocross track in your back yard? I certainly couldn’t. It was so cool. His track is also really good. For me it was very difficult. I was having to learn and practice everything. In fact there wasn’t a single jump that I cleared. I’m also very calculated in my approach to this type of stuff, so it takes some time before I’m willing to hang it out and risk injury.
I was able to meet and ride with some of the coolest guys on the planet too.
I was also able to capture some photographs of the riding which I’ve shared on my MX Photography page. Just look for the links title “Motoman Facility…” and you can see the pictures… or actually, you can click on them from here:

All in all I had a wonderful time, and want to thank Motoman, DRGSin, and everyone else that made the trip possible, and as much fun as it was.
